SDS is Recruiting!!!

SOAS (Student) Detainee Support Group recruiting for Board of Directors

Deadline: April 10th 2014

Calling dedicated individuals with a broad range of experiences and expertise to support the work of a small initiative working in solidarity with detained migrants.

————————————————————————————————————

SOAS Detainee Support (SDS) is an organisation founded in 2005 that aims to reduce  isolation through visits to empower detainees and to campaign for an end to the use of immigration controls especially the use of immigration detention.

SDS comprises dozens of current members presently visiting detainees in detention, over a hundred members trained over the last year and remains in contact with hundreds of previously active members, many of whom have pursued further work within the migration area. SDS has a single paid part-time coordinator and a small working executive team, although all decisions regarding SDS are made consensually between all active members.

In April 2014 SOAS Detainee Support Group (SDS) will be re-naming itself Student Detainee Support Group, and registering as  a Company Limited by Guarantee. The group is looking to recruit a minimum of three and a maximum of seven individuals to make up a Board of Directors. This Board would support, oversee and direct the work of the group, with a view to advancing the strategic functioning and development of the organisation.

The standard term for each post will be two years, though at least one post will be for an initial period of one year to allow for rotational continuity between re-elections. All Directors will be elected to open seats, with an internal allocation process for the roles of Secretary
and Treasurer after election.

Individuals with experience of leading a company at CEO/Assistant Director level, of fundraising in the charity sector, members of the SOAS Student Union, and those with hands-on experience of immigration detention and/or of visiting detention are particularly encouraged to apply.

The Board of Directors will meet on a quarterly basis, but individual members will be contacted for consultation on their area of expertise when this knowledge may be of benefit to the organisation. Board members will also be officially and publicly registered as company directors.

New directors will be voted in during the SDS AGM on 30th April 2014.

If you are interested in becoming a member of the Board of Directors, please read the SDS mission statement as well as previous reports and other information on the SDS webpage before sending your CV and a motivational cover letter of around 500 words to soas_detainee_support@riseup.net by 10th April  2014.

Further details about the Board can be found here. Any queries should be sent to soas_detainee_support@riseup.net.
